It has been a privilege to serve again as President of HHIA and work with such a fine and dedicated group of people that are on the Board of Directors. As I mentioned at our 65th Anniversary Dinner - Annual Meeting, we accomplished a great deal in 2012. The most significant activity was working with Supervisor Knabe to resist the attempt by the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments (COG) in their thoughts to support an extension of the CUP for the Puente Hills Landfill. With Supervisor Knabe's and Assembly Majority Leader Charles Calderon's assistance, COG dropped the item from their active agenda. We also reviewed 8 CUP applications for items such as licenses for sale of alcoholic beverages, building expansions, and the construction of cell sites in our community. We also met with the Department of Parks and Recreation and the Habitat Authority to begin discussions to address who will be responsible and what will be the end use of the property after the Puente Hills Landfill closes. We also had some interesting programs involving coyotes coming into our neighborhoods and why they are being fearless and brazen, an update on the Duck Farm Project along the 605 Freeway, and a discussion on the various uses and supply of water. We had a successful Jim Davis Beautification Day on June 30th and we won a trophy for our float decorations in the Hacienda Heights 4th of July Parade. So it has been a busy and interesting year for HHIA.
I want to thank the Board of Directors for all their efforts during 2012. Each member took time to attend outside meetings representing HHIA and prepared reports to update everyone in attendance at our meetings on what is occurring in and around Hacienda Heights related to their area of responsibility. Adria Ybarra wore many different hats this year; she was our Vice President, Board Sponsor for the 65th Anniversary Dinner, and Membership Chairperson. The anniversary dinner was a big success and everyone had a good time and our membership rolls grew this year under her leadership. Jeff Yann again served as Secretary and Environmental Chairperson. His passion for protecting the environment in Hacienda Heights is very strong. He also does a great job recording the activities of our meetings. Chris Kakiml was our Treasurer and Programs & Website Chairperson. He again was an excellent steward of our financial well-being. Brent Palmer was our Code Enforcement Chairperson and he took on that assignment with a great deal of energy. He worked with the County and CalTrans on various parking and landscaping issues in the community. Hanny Zamora, Community Relations Chairperson, reached out to other organizations in Hacienda Heights to build strong relationships with them, including the Kiwanis Club and the 4th of July Parade Committee. Maury Edwards again served as Parks & Recreation Chairperson as well as the Jim Davis Beautification Day Chairperson. He did an outstanding job in both roles. His tireless efforts again ensured that the beautification day was another huge success. This event truly brings many organizations and volunteers together to work for the betterment of our community. Mike Williams took on the Public Relations Chairperson assignment this year. He was able to make contact with the San Gabriel Valley Tribune and our meetings and activities were publicized in the newspaper more than any time in the recent past. Lucy Pedregon was our Public Safety & Health Chairperson. Again, she provided some very informative and interesting reports that could be used by everyone. Jeffrey Lin took on the Streets and Highways assignment and kept our membership current on all the activities related to street improvements in our community, including the Seventh Ave., Colima Ave., and Turnbull Canyon Road repairs and improvements. Joan Licari was our Water and Utility Services Chairperson. She had a busy year keeping track of the new electric transmission towers being built on the top of our hills and the many new cell sites that were proposed for our area. Last but not least, Shan Lee, our Director who retired due to term limits, was our Zoning Chairperson. He again had a busy year tracking various zoning issues related to CUP applications and construction of some new homes in the area.
As you can see, the Board of Directors was very busy keeping a watchful eye on events and proposals affecting Hacienda Heights. We owe them our gratitude for investing their own time to ensure we live in a great community! I want to personally thank all of them for their support and dedication.
2013 appears to be as challenging! I look forward to working with the new Board. Our newest member is Sandy Keat. She has lived in Hacienda Heights for more than 40 years. She has been involved in the Hacienda Heights Republican Women's Club, she ran for HLPUSD Board of Education, and has been an active member of the Hacienda Heights Women's Club to name a few of the organizations she has worked with. She will become our Community Relations Chairperson this year.
We face some significant challenges in 2013.
- Monitor the closure of the Puente Hills Landfill on October 31, 2013
- Ensure the Jim Davis Beautification Day on Saturday, June 29th, is a success
- Participate in the groundbreaking and construction of the Hacienda Heights Community Center and Orange Grove Park
- Address community issues and concerns received through our website
I look forward to working with the Board and ail our members, to continue HHIA's great tradition of protecting and overseeing the quality of life for our community of Hacienda
Signed: John Eckman
65th Anniversary Dinner - Annual Meeting
On Friday, January 18th, HHIA celebrated its 65th Anniversary with a dinner at Steinmetz Senior Center. We greeted over 80 guests. Special guests included Assemblymember Ian Calderon and Danny Fierro, Field Deputy to the Assemblymember, Dickie Simmons, Field Deputy to Supervisor Knabe, Young Kim and Laura Kung, Directors from Congressman Ed Royce's Office, and HLPUSD Board of Education members; Jay Chen, Anthony Duarte, and Gino Kwok.
This year, the HHIA Board recognized four outstanding individuals with Certificates of Merit Awards recognizing them for their many years of service to Hacienda Heights. The individuals recognized were longtime residents Mae Chu, Mike Hughes, Bob Isaacson, and Sandy Johnson.
Shan Lee, our retiring Director due to term limits, was recognized for his six years of service to the community and HHIA. He has served as our Zoning Chairperson during that time.
There are many people to thank for making this evening happen. First and foremost are Adria Ybarra, Board Sponsor, Jean Robson, Dinner Chairperson, and Maury Edwards, Lucy Pedregon, and Hanny Zamora, Dinner Committee. We also want to thank Supervisor Knabe for sponsoring the event at the Senior Center. We also want to thank Margaret Trujillo, the staff of the Senior Center, and the Wilson Kiwins for setting up and serving the dinner. We could not have done it without you!
We want to thank the Hsi Lai Temple, Costco, Pizza Company, Valley Vista, Congressman Royce, Popular Community Bank, Cathy Jamieson, and the other individuals for their donations of food and/or raffle prizes.
It was a fun night to celebrate the community's and HHIA's history and recognize individuals that have served our community for many years and helped make it a better place to live.
